Pruning saws are used on branches too large for loppers – generaly branches more than 3/4 inch in diameter. They can cut branches 4 to 5 inches in diameter. Large-toothed saws produce a rough edge. The smaller teeth of Japanese-type saws cut quickly and neatly. Carpenter saws aren’t suitable for pruning because they are made to cut dry, not greenwood. Pruning saws cut on the pull stroke while carpenter saws cut on the push stroke.
